چکیده

In October 2006, Andrew Z. Fire (Stanford University School of Medicine) and Craig C. Mello (University of Massachusetts Medical School) were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2006 for their discovery of RNA interference (RNAi)—gene silencing by doublestranded DNA (http://nobelprize.org/). We have compiled an overview of this new technology, addressing the basic concepts of ribonucleic acid (RNA) interference (RNAi), as well as several therapeutic applications for neurological disorders and its relevance for neurosurgeons. Encouraging results with RNAi-based therapies have been achieved in models of neurological disease, revealing the potential for translation to the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, including movement disorders, brain tumors, and pain.5,31 The clinical translation of this technology will have a direct impact into neurosurgery practice, requiring neurosurgical intervention for effective targeted delivery to the central nervous system (CNS).

Cell based therapeutics is one of the most rapidly advancing medical fields, bringing together a range of fields including transplantation, tissue engineering and regeneration, biomaterials and stem cell biology. However, traditional cell-based therapeutics have many limitations, one of which is their harmful effects exhibited on healthy body cells due to their lack of specificity. Nanomedicine...

A Protocol for Diagnosis and Management of Cerebrospinal Shunt Infections and other Infectious Conditions in Neurosurgical Practice

Infections of the cerebrospinal shunts and other neurosurgical structures are not uncommon in the clinical practice. These infections are mostly clinical emergencies carrying negative prognostic impacts on the patients as well as spending healthcare resources. The low pathogenicity nature of some implicated pathogens results in minimal physical signs that may complicate the diagnosis and mislea...

Clinical guideline of neurosurgical practice during the COVID-19 pandemic

Background: Neurosurgery practice conflicts with many challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic; Including the lack of beds in intensive care units, as well as the use of some methods such as drills and trans-nasal and trans-oral approaches that produce aerosols or are directly in contact with patient discharge. Due to these challenges, developing a clinical guideline to help neurosurgeons and me...

The Effect of Contextual Interference on Acquisition and Learning Badminton Skills among Children aged from 10 to 12

Age may limit the effect of contextual interference, but the accurate effect of age on contextual interference is not completely identified. Therefore, the purpose of the study was the effect of contextual interference practice orders on acquisition and learning of badminton skills of 45 female students aged from 10 to 12. Participants were randomly assigned to one of the three groups of bloc...
